In practice

Gældsstyrelsen collects claims for the public sector — tax, fines, overpaid benefits. It cannot be used by private creditors, and that is the first thing to settle: your invoice does not enter that system, however well founded it is.

The agency still matters to a private creditor, and it does so through its tools. Wage attachment takes money directly out of the debtor’s income before it arrives, and set-off can absorb a tax refund that might otherwise have gone to paying you. Where a debtor is in that position, there is genuinely less to levy against by the time you reach the bailiff’s court.

In practical terms, information about public debt is a signal rather than a detail. A debtor with substantial public debt is rarely one who just needs one more reminder.

Where it commonly goes wrong

  • Waiting because a public collection is already under way. It does not resolve your claim, and limitation keeps running in the meantime.
  • Assuming the public sector always ranks first. In bankruptcy most public claims follow the ordinary order of priority as unsecured claims.
