CVR number (CVR-nummer)

Also known as cvr, company registration number, virksomhedsnummer

The CVR number is a company's unique identifier — the thing that settles who the claim is actually directed against.

In practice

A name on an invoice is not enough. “Jensen Byg” may be three different companies, one of which went bankrupt last year. The CVR number settles who is liable.

It is the first thing that has to be right, and the thing most often wrong in old cases — and that is expensive: a claim directed against the wrong CVR number is a claim against the wrong party.

Where it commonly goes wrong

  • The customer is set up by name. Without a CVR number, you do not know who you have extended credit to.
  • Nobody checks whether the number is still active. A company facing compulsory dissolution still has a registration number.
  • The invoice goes to a different company than the one you contracted with. Group names look alike, and the claim follows the registration number, not the logo.
